Text
"I can Work Like any Guy"
I didn't know what I wanted to be in my last year of High School. I changed my mind every week or so. For a while I thought of becoming a music teacher, or a science teacher. I also thought about becoming a vet, or getting some other sort of job where I could work with animals. Then, about halfway through the year, something which happened helped me decide what I really wanted to do.
I got a driving licence. My sister was driving instructor at the time, and I had a friend who was a motor mechanic. We used to spend every spare minute driving around in my mother's Cortina. I became crazy about cars. I got to the stage where I was reading car magazines every night instead of watching T.V. My father
got pretty tired of all this and suggested one evening that I should become a motor mechanic. He was only joking, but it started me thinking I got a driving licence. My sister was driving instructor at the time, and I had a friend who was a motor mechanic. We used to spend every spare minute driving around in my mother's Cortina. I became crazy about cars. I got to the stage where I was reading car magazine every night instead of watching T.V. My father got pretty tired of all this and suggested one evening that I should become a motor mechanic. He was only joking, but it started me thinking — why shouldn't I
Later that year I went on a tour of Canberra Technical College with my class from school. I talked with some second and third year students who were apprentice motor mechanics. It sounded pretty interesting, so I did an aptitude test. The test was to whether I was mechanically-minded — not to find out how much I already knew. They told me afterwards that my score 'wasn't bad for a
female'. This made up my mind to become a motor mechanic.
The most difficult thing was finding someone willing to employ me. I wrote to the manager of every garage in Canberra asking for a job. Only two of them were willing even to give me an interview. One manager kept asking me really difficult questions and laughing at me every time I couldn't answer. I could see that he did not want to employ me.
The other manager, who is now my boss, was really decent, but he wasn't very encouraging at first. He listed all the problems he could face if he took on a girl as an apprentice. First it might upset the man if they had to work with a female in the workshop every day. Secondly, he would waste time and money training me if I left soon after to have children. Thirdly, I might not be physically strong enough, and the men would have to leave their jobs to help me every ten minutes or so. I did my best to convince him that I
was as responsible and capable as any man. He agreed to give me a chance.
Several weeks after I started working, my boss told me he was glad he had taken me on. He said the keen and friendly service I gave was just what the customers wanted. I certainly enjoy the work. I like working with my hands, with machines, and I love the freedom of being able to move about and talk as loudly as I like.

Notes to the Text
1. I didn't know I wanted to be in my last year of High School.
"High school", also known as "secondary school", follows primary school and normally lasts six years. The last year of high school is often referred to as " Year 12".
2. I got a driving licence.
In Australia only people who have reached 18 years of age and have passed certain tests can get driving licences. For young people a driving licence is a symbol of adulthood.
3. We used to spend every pare minute driving around in my mother's Cortina.
Cortina is a make of a car produced in the U.S.A. Other
popular care brands are Buick, Volkswagen, Austin, Fiat, Toyota, Honda and a host of others. Often the brand of a person's car is an indication of his social status. For example, Mercedes, Rolls Royce and Cadillac are expensive cars only the wealthy can afford.
4. The test was to see whether I was mechanically-minded.
This means "the boss wanted to find out through the test whether she had the right sort of mind to work with machines."
Similar expressions include philosophically-minded, mathematically-minded, etc.
5. Only two of them were willing even to give me an interview.
After receiving a person's application for a job, the employer takes up his references and may arrange an interview with him to find out more about his background, his ability, his appearance and other relevant details. If the employer does not think the
application has a chance at all, he normally does not interview him. He might write him a letter to say that the vacancy has been filled or that there are too many applicants for the job.

The famous pianist, Paderewski was once walking down the street of a small town. He
came upon a house on which hung the following sign:
Piano Lessons
by
Miss Jones
2 dollars per week

Inside, someone was playing one of Chopin's nocturnes. Paderewski stopped and listened. The playing, however, was very bad. In fact, it was so bad that Paderewski felt it was an insult to the memory of Chopin. Finally, he walked up to the door and knocked. When Miss Jones herself answered the door, Paderewski introduced himself and explained to her that he had listened to her play. He also said that, if she wished him to do so, he would gladly play the nocturne for her in the way that a pianist should play it. Miss Jones was very happy to hear this and invited Paderewski to come in. Paderewski entered and for half an hour played several of Chopin's pieces.
About one year later, Paderewski was in the same town again and was walking down the same street. In the distance, he could hear a Chopin's nocturne being badly played. When he came to the same house again, he now saw a new sign hanging outside:
