Going on a Diet
The phrase "going on a diet" has been very popular in recent years. People generally relate it to girls. Indeed, many girls going on a diet with a view to becoming more slim and charming. A good figure is what they want from going on a diet. However, going on a diet hasn't been the privilege of girls. Many overweight people also go on a diet for the sake of their health, for fatness can lead to many diseases.
Going on a diet is quite necessary for people who are overweight , but it may have a negative effect on those who are not troubled by their weight , especially when they use it as the only way to reduce their weight in order to keep a good figure. Moreover, going on a diet needs perseverance. When a short time of going on a diet is followed by an act of devouring fatty food, the consequence will be terrible.

Fast Food
Many restaurants, in particular those near the railway stations, airports or the market areas specialize in the "fast food", food which is served at the counter ready "to go " or " to take out". The food, cooked and hot, is packed into plastic containers.
There are at least two reasons for the development of fast food. First of all, people are too busy with their work for the most convenient food at hand to save time for more work. The second reason is that eating fast food is cheaper. You need not empty your wallet to buy one.
Today, many kinds of food can be converted into fast food. In addition to the most popular one such as hot dogs, hamburgers, rice and noodles can also be served as fast food. We can often hear "Are you hungry Let's have a snack now."

Our Eating Habits
The survey shows that students, generally speaking, spend little time eating. They eat three meals a day, with rice as their basic food. Students from the north like pasta, for example, noodles, steam bread, and dumplings. Most students like fresh fish, seafood, and eggs. Only a few students say they are keen on meats of all kinds. Most students eat their meals at the students' cafeterias. They don't cook at home, and some haven't tried. Their parents or grandparents do the cooking in their families.
What is unusual is the fact that many students don't eat vegetables. They think fruit can provide all the necessary nutrients their bodies need. With some students, milk is gradually taking the place of water and other drinks. Besides, in many families, it is now the father who does the most of the cooking. The role of the mother seems to have changed a lot.

Self-confidence
Self-confidence refers to the first belief in one's capability to do things well. In many cases, self-confidence is crucial to one's success because it on the one hand provides a solid psychological ground for one's work and on the other hand, it is based on an evaluation of one's understanding of a certain kind of knowledge done by oneself.
Self-confidence is an important factor in our work. We can safely draw the conclusion that being given the same kind of work, a self-confident person will find the work much easier and more interested than one that holds a gloomy view on one's own ability. Similarly, when facing a patient, the doctor who is quite confident of his diagnosis is more likely to give much comfort to the patient and therefore achieves a more satisfying result than a doctor who isn't because the self-confidence of a doctor greatly influences his patient's mood.
However, we shouldn't confuse self-confidence with conceit. The former is based on a thorough understanding of knowledge one has acquired, whereas the latter isn't. Conceit may make people succeed temporarily, but that won't last. Nevertheless, self-confidence is forever a help, a stimulus to one's success.

My Opinion on Keeping One's Word
Keeping one's word is a rare quality that man can possess because the basic character of the world is changing. When things have changed, is it possible that a person can still keep his word The answer is "Yes", but it demands a lot on the part of the person.
Do you have the experience that you promised to do something for others, but when the moment really comes, it turned out that, if you did it, you would have to sacrifice a lot yourself. For example, parents may promise to go on a travel if their child could get a satisfactory mark in the examination. But when the child comes home with a satisfactory mark, they are engaged in their work so that they can't leave within weeks. How to make the decision If the person gives up the travel, the child will feel hurt; but if the parents keep their word, the work will be interrupted, which is forbidden by the boss. Anyway, they have to suffer in a sense.
In a word, I think we should try to avoid promising anything if it is impossible. And if you have promised, try to keep it at all expenses.

How to Prepare for a Job Interview
If you wish to pursue your professional career successfully, it is essential to find a satisfactory job. A job interview, in some cases, can be of critical importance for you to obtain a job you like. Since a job interview is so important, we should be well-prepared for it. Here are some of my suggestions.
First of all, consider your qualifications and background and decide whether they satisfy the requirements of the job. If they do, get familiar with them in case you are asked about them during the interview.
Secondly, remember your special abilities or hobbies, such as playing basketball or chess. Mention them if necessary. They may surprisingly influence the interviewers.
My final advice is that you should take special care of your appearance. Though we should not judge a person by his appearance, the first impression is very important.

My Ideal Job
When we are asked about what we want to be in the future, we have different answers. We may want to be a doctor, a lawyer, a politician, a scientist, or a worker and so on.
My ideal job is to be an excellent teacher. This idea came into being when I was very young. No one is born with knowledge. If I am a teacher, I will be able to turn an ignorant boy into a learned person. I will teach what I know to my students. Sometimes I will be able to learn something from them because students are always active and creative. So life will be interesting and meaningful.
However, I know it isn't easy for me to be a good teacher. Being a teacher needs knowledge, patience, skills etc.. First, I must study very hard so that I will have a good command of knowledge. Second, I must learn to be patient so that I can tolerate the naughty students or the slow speed of some students in accepting knowledge. Third, I will study the skill of teaching so that I can make my students understand what I have said when I am a teacher.
So, you see, different jobs require different talents. I will try to make my ideal come true.

Advantages of a Job Interview
Now, when a person is hunting for a job, there will always be a job interview, and I think the job interview has a lot of advantages. The interviewer and the interviewee can know about each other from it.
First, the interviewer can tell something about the job to the interviewee such as salary, the work conditions and something else that is relevant to the job. Then the interviewee can decide whether the job is really suitable for him.
Second, I think the job interview is a good chance for the interviewee to show his ability and knowledge by expressing himself to the interviewer. He can also show both his ability and his confidence. Then, the interviewer can figure out whether he is the right person for the job.
In a word, I think the interview will do good to both the interviewer and the interviewee. By an interview the interviewer can find a suitable person if both of them make the best of the job interview.

Students Taking Part-time Job Good or Bad
Some people think that college students should do part-time job while they study. They think college students will be a member of the society soon, and they need to get the real sense of how the society runs. That's to say doing part-time job may be a good way because pat-time jobs not only give you the chance to show your ability, but also bring you a useful experience to your future.
By contrast, other people believe that doing part-time job is harmful to the students. They believe that, to a student, study should always be in the first place and taking part-time job will reduce the students' study time. Besides, the outside's colorful world may change those students and make them not like to study quietly on the campus.
In my opinion, students must learn to face the outside world, whether its good or bad because students will graduate sooner or later. Since college students will be members of the society, they need to learn about it, of course. Being a student, study is very important, but only if you take part-time job, can you know what is needed to learn. So I believe that, if one spends his time wisely, he will do well in both study and part-time job.

On Reading
Nowadays a few of us read many books after we leave school. This tendency is rather disturbing, for one should know that books are no less necessary to one's mental life than fresh air is to one's physical life.
From good reading, we can derive companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book is our faithful friend. It can increase our contentment when we are cheerful and happy, and lessen our pain when we are sad or lonely. Books can also offer us a wide range of experiences. In books, we may join tourists traveling around the world. Few of us can live forever, but we can live many different lives through the pages of books. What's more, reading books can increase our intellectual ability, broaden our minds and make us wise and clever.
Though with the development of television and books are no longer read as widely as before, nothing can replace the role that books play in our life.

Writing an Essay
Writing an essay requires much work. It involves searching for an idea, looking for materials to support it, and then organizing the materials.
The idea is the most important thing for an essay. You'd better make it as clear as possible. As the unifying point of the whole essay, it is usually put in a prominent position such as beginning an essay.
Once the idea has been found, you have to find materials to support it. Make sure that every detail you select must contribute to the central idea of your essay. Those materials that are not of much use to the illustration of the central idea should be cut out without mercy for the sake of brevity.
In order to make the essay persuasive, you have to organize the materials in a logical way. Whenever you put forward a point, you should use materials to support it. In this way, you can write a good essay.
Useful expressions
1. contribute to 有助于,贡献给…,为…出力
2. in a logical way以符合逻辑的方式

Use Mandarin or Your Own Dialect
Once I met two girls from central China, I knew they had their dialect. But to my surprise, they kept on speaking mandarin even when they reached their home city. They said that the dialect was not so dulcet as mandarin.
Whether the dialect is dulcet or not, it is not up to me to make the judgment. At first, I was impressed by their courage because I myself speak a dialect. And I find it extremely uncomfortable to speak mandarin to my family, my relatives, and my local friends because mandarin seems to play the role of distancing two persons when we already share a dialect. The dialect asserts my identity, my belonging to the place.
One reason that underlines the girls' preference may be that mandarin as the official language is much more prestigious than the dialect. Perhaps they want to show their education and their social position, and speaking mandarin is a way of doing that. Mandarin makes their identity vague; it obscures their relation to a certain place. That's what they want in our mobile society. But for myself, I still treasure my dialect which gives me so much warmth sometimes.
Useful expressions
1. not so dulcet as mandarin没有普通话这样悦耳
2. it is not up to me to make the judgement不是由我来作出判断
3. prestigious有声望的,有威信的,受尊敬的

Should Learners Aim to Speak English with a Native-Speaker Pronunciation
In my opinion, there is no point in aiming to speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation. For most people, it is a waste of time.
First, language is a bridge for communication between human beings. If the people we meet understand what we are saying, that is all that is necessary. We do not need to imitate their pronunciation. In any case, there are many types of accents, so how would you choose which one to imitate.
Second, how you organize what you want to express is the most important thing. Your ideas should be clear and easy to understand. Your vocabulary should be good and your grammar should be correct.
Third, given the fact that we live in China, it seems a little bit pointless for us to try desperately hard to get rid of our national accent in order to speak BBC English.
Finally, each of us has our own pronunciation style when we speak. If you can give free rein to your style, the English-speaking world will become more colourful and more interesting.
In a word, I prefer to speak with my characteristic and recognizable pronunciation.
Useful expressions

Which Has Had More Influence on You, Heredity or Environment
I benefit and suffer much from heredity. A short but stout figure, an introvert but sincere personality, and unimaginative but rational mind: all of these traits come from the genes passed on to me. But my family, school, and society play an important role in my life.
My parents are both blue-collar workers, which makes me fond of physical exercise and turns my big frame into a strong body. My honest parents punish me severely whenever I lie or make false promise, thus I learnt the importance of personal integrity. In school, I learned to help others, to care for others and also to improve my reasoning and understanding skills. Learning about good and bad examples of behaviour from the media and other sources of information, I am able to set up my moral system of what to do and what to hate.
Environment can change a person completely no matter where he was born and what he inherited from his parents. I always believe that a person can succeed in doing anything he really wants to do. Your environment provides all kinds of opportunities and necessary things throughout your life.

Benefits of Attending Concert
Attending concert is a very benefiting practice. Here I would like to specify the sense of concert to that of classical music.
Why is this practice good to people who love music The reason may be as follows: First, going to a concert is a good way of entertaining oneself. Second, listening to live performance may achieve better sound effect than listening to the radio, CD player or through other means . Third, to those who play certain musical instrument, going to concert may help them to learn the way the experts and masters play. Finally, there are rules at a concert. Going to a Disco Club
Once I went to a disco club with some of my friends. It's my first time there, but my experience there was rather disappointing and uncomfortable.
First of all, the music was so loud that it became deafening to one's ears. I felt my heart beat was faster and heavier than in the normal situation. So I had to choose a far corner where the music was not that loud. Then my friends encouraged me to join the group and have a dance. So I did. However, I soon found my dancing so clumsy and awkward that finally I decided to withdraw to my corner. Even watching the other people dancing made me feel uncomfortable because most of the dancers seemed very funny in their action. Very soon all of us grew tired of this game and we all wished to leave.
When we got out of the place, the night was dark and quiet. We began to laugh at this funny experience and soon forgot it.

The Brain and the Computer
Some recent developments in the computer industry make scientists predict that the gap between human beings and machines will be closed about the year 2005.
To understand the significance of this prediction, let us compare the human brain with existing computers. The brain consumes electrical energy at the rate of 25 watts and occupies a volume of one tenth of a cubic foot. The brain houses between 10 billion and 100 billion items of information. Every brain cell is directly connected to many other cells. As a result, the cells in which information is stored can communicate with thousands of other cells.
However, the computer consumes 100,000 watts of electrical power and occupies hundreds of cubic feet of space. Its capacity is far less than that of the brain. It only holds a few million items of immediately accessible information. In contrast, the computer memory is like a cell of pigeonholes, with no thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere.
In a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains.

On Intelligence
Are some people born clever, and others born stupid Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience Most experts now hold the view that to some extent our intelligence is given us at birth. On the other hand, the environment plays an important part in developing our intelligence.
Some scientific experiments show that the closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. If we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely deferent. But if we take two identical twins and put them in different environments, what results will we get 25 years later
Let's suppose that one brother will receive higher education and the other only receive little education and do boring physical work. Then we will soon find differences in intelligence developing.
So we can reach a conclusion that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with, but environments play an important part in the development of intelligence.

Should Women Have Equal Job Opportunities with Men
As can be seen in the table, the percentage of people who agree with this point exceeds that of people who disagree, especially in China. However, in China and the U.S., particularly in Japan, there are still some people against women's equal job opportunities with men. Possible reasons for this, I think, are as follows:
For one thing, the women's liberation movement across the world has raised women's social positions a lot. In China, laws concerned have been passed to protect women's rights in many areas. In the U.S., it is illegal to discriminate against women in employment. For another, women are still thought inferior to men in many aspects as a result of traditional ideas as well as physiological difference between men and women . And this is rather serious in Japan.
It is my opinion that women's importance in society should be admitted by more and more people. The society should provide them with more job opportunities rather than look down upon them.

Should Girls Be Deprived of the Right to Schooling
It is reported recently that in certain areas in China, many girls have dropped out of schools, and many don't even enter a school at all. This situation is especially bad in some ethnic areas. Many schools have virtually become boys' schools. A marked tendency is the higher the grade, the fewer the girls.
Where are all the school-girls Why have so many girls dropped out of schools when they are in great need of education Some people think it is merely the traditional slight on daughters on the part of the parents. Some blame the new economic policy, saying that daughters are needed at home to help the family become rich.
Whatever the reason, this has shaken the very foundation of our education. People are afraid that very soon our universities and colleges will only have boy students. Women's position in society will go back to what it was a century ago. Therefore it is a problem that not only faces Chinese women themselves, but also faces the whole nation. There is a long, long way for girls to go to strive for the equal right as boys.

The Sex Discrimination
Many years ago, people used to think women were not as clever as men, and their greatest duty was to have children and look after their husbands and children at home. And they should depend on their husbands for food and clothes. So women have been looked down upon for centuries. In order to gain equal rights as men, they have been fighting for a long long time. Since this century, women's position in society has been gradually improved.
Recently, however, in face of economic crisis, some people have again advocated keeping women at home. Some departments in colleges are almost closed to girls. And many organizations and work units are equally bad in sex discrimination when taking in new employees. One's sex is more important than one's other qualities, it seems. So you can see sex discrimination everywhere, especially in finding jobs. Even if women are accepted, most of them are in the service profession, such as nurses, waitresses, hairdressers and salesgirls, etc. Only very few can become heads of high position in governments or business.
We think equality of the sexes is certainly a very complicated problem. If we want to solve the problem, we still have a long way to go.

Road Accidents
According to the information provided by the researcher, the fatal and serious casualties of all roads users in Great Britain vary with age. Of the three age groups, the young suffer the most, the peak period being 15-30. Next comes children under 10 ,and from 30 to 80 there is a gradual decline.
Accidents for children are due to poor judgement of children themselves and insufficient care by their parents. The rashness and audacity of the young result in the peak period while the gradual decline may be accounted for the prudence of the middle-aged and the old.
Something must be done about this. Children should be taken by their parents to cross the streets. More attention should be drawn from the young upon the traffic regulations As for the middle-aged and the old, it's only fair for them to bear in mind that their spouses and kids cannot afford to lose them.

Are Environment Risks Worth Taking
Environment risks are not worth taking. Man has already done too much damage to the planet. We will all suffer the consequence of increased global warming, massive pollution of rivers and oceans, and continued destruction of forests. We must start looking for more ways to improve the environment rather than continuing to damage it.
It is well-known that everyone wants to have a more comfortable life. We want refrigerators, television sets, and the other household items. We want cars instead of bicycles. We want to be able to buy more and more things. But at what cost If we produce more garbage, if we pollute the air, the land, the rivers, we will suffer. We will not be able to breathe in fresh air or drink clean water. Health risks will increase and our life span will decrease.
The environmental risks we are taking today are not worth taking in the long run. The short-term gains are not worth the long-term pain and suffering.

Smoking and Cancer
Smoking is harmful to the health of people. It not only pollutes air, brings about sufferings of other people such as children and nonsmokers, but also causes diseases of bronchitis, lung cancer, chest cancer and throat cancer.
Smoking is associated with cancers. Smoke is a mixture of gases, vaporized chemicals, minute particles of ash, and other solids. There are also tar and nicotine, which are powerful poisons. As smoke is breathed in, all these components form deposits on the membranes of the lungs. One point of concentration is where air tube , or bronchus divides. Most lung cancer begins at this point.
World governments should conduct serious campaigns against smoking. First, legislative steps must be introduced. Second, restrictions on cigarette advertisements must be imposed. Third, public smoking in certain places such as theatres, cinemas, waiting rooms at airports and railway stations should be banned. In this way, we may make the smokers feel increasingly uncomfortable about their bad habits. Finally, cigarette price should be increased.

Living at College or at Home
There are two types of college experiences: living at college and living at home. It's possible to get an equally good education from one as from the other. Nevertheless, living away has more advantages than staying at home.
Students who live at college are deeply involved in school activities. College becomes a world itself in which students can devote themselves totally to study. In contrast, students living at home cannot get into the world of college. It is still like a high school.
Thanks to living in a dormitory, those living at college have more freedom. The freedom of living at college builds social maturity. They have to get along with many new, unknown people. The experience helps them grow. Students living at home, on the other hand, deal most of the time with people they've already known: their teachers and classmates. There isn't enough chance to meet new friends because, when classes end, they'll go home.
Living at college is better intellectually. Class discussions can be carried on to dinner table. The library is a short walk away. Students who live at home don't have these advantages. They have no one to share their experience or talk about what came up in class. Studying is difficult at home because of the noise and some other distractions. And there is no library nearby.
Useful expressions
1. be deeply involved in深深卷入…,参加
2. devote to 致力于…
3. In contrast相比之下,和…形成对比/对照
4. Thanks to多亏了,由于
5. social maturity 社会阅历/经验上成熟

Who Should Pay for Education
Education is valued as one of the major institutions in almost every society. Meanwhile it is very expensive operation, so it is important to consider carefully who should pay for it.
It is argued that education, as a very precious commodity, should be paid for by its recipients, the students. This view is, to some extent, justifiable. The recipients can get a lot of benefits after receiving education. For example, the people who have received higher education have more chances to get a good job, and can earn more money than those who have not received education. In this sense, the recipients should pay for the advantages that they receive.
However, it should not be neglected that in fact who have most gained from education are the members of society itself, whose administrator, the government, should pay for this education. This is because we are dealing with a very special commodity, which equips those people who receive it with what they have learnt in the service of society. And compared with what these educated people, the products of the education system, can contribute to society, the rewards which they get are of less significance.
Meanwhile, the law regulations said that all people should have equal rights to receive education. If this education is paid for by the recipients themselves, many poor children will be excluded from school just because their parents do not have the money to pay for it. In fact, this is a policy of discrimination, which offends against the law. So it should indeed be, not the students, but the government, that should pay for the education system.

Life in the University
Life in the university is not as comfortable as expected. Firstly, we are heavily burdened with many classes, excessive homework and exams. Secondly, the old conservative teaching method is still too dull. Finally, the living condition here is much worse than that at home: food in the dinning hall is far from being tasteful.
Despite all these adversities, we still enjoy our life in the university. By studying hard, we can not only acquire lots of knowledge but foster various abilities. In addition, there are many activities, like speech contests, social gathering and dancing parties, which provide opportunities to make friends.
In a word, we should value our life in the university. Four years is only a short period compared with our lifetime. In the university we mature and prepare ourselves for the real social life. So life in the university is really worthwhile.

Punctuality
A punctual person never loses his time. He does what he has to do at the proper time, never late in keeping an appointment. And he gains his good name by valuing every minute , for time is life itself.
To be punctual is a sign of respect towards others. If a person is invited to a party and arrives later than appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. This is a great discourtesy to both the host and the guests.
Punctuality means reliability. A person known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his fellow men. Who dare entrust him with anything, let alone important tasks

Ways People Choose to Spend Leisure Time
Although there are many different ways people choose to spend their leisure time, physical and intellectual recreation are the two basic ways.
Physical recreation refers to participation in all kinds of sport activities ranging from games to running slowly. It offers people the opportunities to strengthen their bodies and their competitive nature. Intellectual recreation refers to those activities involving the mental powers in some ways, such as reading a good book, listening to a favorite record, or going to a play. It serves to restore vitality to people's mental process.
As for me, I prefer a balance of these two ways to provide both physical conditioning and mental relaxation. Physical recreation is necessary for my good health, which is the basis for my university study, while intellectual activities provide the most pleasure for me.

The Value of Time
A proverb says: "Time is money." But in my opinion, time is even more precious than money. Why Because when money is spent, we can earn it back. However, when time is gone, it will never return. This is the reason why we must value time.
It goes without saying that the time at our disposal is unusually limited. Hence, even an hour is extremely precious. We should make full use of our time to do useful things. As students, we must make our efforts to be engaged in our studies so as to serve society and our nation in the future.
But it is a pity that there are a lot of people who do not know the importance of time. They spend their precious time smoking, drinking, and gambling. They do not realize that waste time is equal to wasting a part of their valuable life.
In a word, we should get into the good habit of saving time. Do not put off what can be done today until tomorrow. Laziness will not only bring us failure but also lead us to the road of poverty.

The Future
Many people are concerned about future because they know it will be very different from today. In the past, things changed very little from day to day. Today, it seems, things change all the time, and we can expect the future to hold even more changes for us. For example, in China, more people are enjoying the fruit of technology such as televisions, clothes washers, microwave ovens, VCDs, and even dishwashing machines. These things are changing the way we live, and even the way we think.
People are also concerned about future because of the problems that we have to solve. In China, we have a serious unemployment problem caused by having a large population. Pollution of rivers, lands, oceans; and the air will continue, even with government regulations, for some time. And we are using up our resources at an alarming rate.
If we want to have a bright future, we have to make decisions now. We can't wait for the future to happen to us, and we must be a part of shaping it. We need to do our part to avoid wasting precious resources. The government needs to encourage development of new forms of energy which are clean, such as wind and solar energy. Farms need to develop better farming techniques to make sure everyone has enough food. And industry must clean up discharged gases and fluids. If we begin to take actions mentioned above now, the future will indeed be very bright.
